Anthony Travalgia: Can Don Sweeney hit the trade deadline jackpot once again? Don Sweeney hit big with deadline trades for Charlie Coyle and Marcus Johansson a year ago. Can he do it again?

You homer bloggers need to stop low-balling your offers for guys who don't need to be traded. Do you not think if Palmeri was going to be moved that another team wouldnt offer more? If he's the guy you want, stop posting the minimum of what you'll give up, step up to the plate and say "I think he gives us a real chance to win the next 2 years and I would be ok paying..." not "Do you think Tom Fitzgerald is naive enough to accept this low ball offer?"

Oh frank off!
It's just pie-in-the sky thinking out loud.
You make it sound like the offer is a second and a prospect.

It's a shame that reality is so uncomfortable for you. Picks range dramatically in value. A first round pick from a team that makes it to the conference finals, is 4 picks removed from the second round. So yeah, a 2020 first from Boston has only slightly more value than a 2020 2nd from LA. Heinen, a former 3rd round pick in a VERY WEAK draft is obviously expendable because, well, he's never going to be anything of significance even though he has succeeded in cracking an NHL roster. And a 7th round flyer from 2 years ago is basically a poop sandwich in fancy wrapping paper... so yeah, the offer is basically a 2nd a prospect for Palmieri, AND EVERY SINGLE TEAM IN THE NHL WOULD OFFER MORE.

I bet for the low price of Zach Hamill you could get Crosby and Malkin. Throw in double Zach with Senyhhsysyshsyshsyen and you can guarantee Pittsburgh retains 50% salary on 87 and 71

Rumor has it that Edmonton's first was offered for Coleman. It's not a stretch to believe they would add Puljujarvi and a roster player for Palmieri. Beat that offer before IGMTF answers the phone.

Triggered much? It's a team focused blog on Hockeybuzz. What front office do you work for? You sound super qualified.

From the Fourth Period who is not a "homer blogger"

"It’s not known what Palmieri’s price tag is, however, but a first-round pick and a top prospect or young NHL-proven asset could be the starting point."

Also "Devils interim-GM is believed to have some interest in Bruins forwards Sean Kuraly and Danton Heinen."

as a devils fan I would officially lose it after this terrible season if we ended up getting Backes on our books. That would not work for us. Our GM made it clear he is building around Nico and Hughes. Backes does not fit that vision and if that is the type of player we want around our young guys, well we already have Simmonds who has said he wants to stay in NJ. We can get him locked up at a 3rd of the price.

I’m sorry trades just don’t work like that. You can’t get a player that is going to take your team over the top and help you contend for the cup while also shedding your cap issues. Trades need to benefit both teams. That would just be highway robbery.

So a first and a player that can't crack the Edmonton Oilers line up?

And I doubt Backes is going anywhere without the Bruins eating $3M of his salary (which I would do in a heartbeat).

Backes would not be going there to play - it would be a dump for the Bruins - hence the "sweetener", as NJ prob has the CAP room to "store" him.

But really it was wishful thinking, and why there's a second proposal without Backes, but also with fewer assets going NJ way.

As much as I want Kreider. The cost is extravagant for a rental. Tough call. I think he has more bite than Nash had, so I wouldn’t be too broken up about paying a premium for him.
As the article says, go after someone with term left. Or find a lesser deal like Johansson in 2019!

Don hasn’t gotten a deal done cause he’s trying to package Backes on something. A Palmeiri deal would be ideal. I’m sure something can be worked out to help both teams.

I don't blame them... After trading Adam Larsson for Taylor Hall, the standards for a trade is high. Thanks Chiarelli

First round pick being included pretty much eliminates any of the big names. Not a bad move if Kase can stay healthy.

My take as well.

I think the price for the big names was just too high - so - clearing cap-space became a priority.

Pretty solid move, getting rid of 75% of the Backes deal while getting a player who can fill in is great.

Not bad at all. That's a big if though. Guy struggles to stay healthy
